To promote the sport of boccia in Bermuda and facilitate international competition.
Boccia is a sport that was designed specifically for athletes with a disability affecting locomotor function, however anyone may play and it is particularly suited to seniors and anybody with limited mobility, offering gentle upper body exercise, socialisation and fun!
Boccia Bermuda is working closely with WindReach where many of the current players were introduced to the game of boccia. It was recognized that there was a demand for this sport to be more widely available to individuals, particularly in the community senior homes. Further, those seeking to develop their skills who have the potential to become elite required a national organization to include coaches, officials and administrative support. This support is all offered voluntarily by the board of directors of Boccia Bermuda.
Boccia in our Seniors' Homes
We have coaches who go out to our seniors' homes on a weekly basis to facilitate boccia sessions. We have over 30 seniors a week enjoying boccia at Lefroy House, Sylvia Richardson Care Facility and Westmeath. As we find and are able to train more coaches, we will be able to serve more of our seniors. Boccia is a fun game that is particularly suited to seniors who may have limited mobility and assists in balance, coordination and increases strength.
Says one of our senior players, “I had never heard of the game Boccia. I now play it on a weekly basis and love it. The banter is good and the games can get quite competitive, but the session is always fun!”
