BSMART’s mission is to provide solid foundations of learning through innovative and scientifically-proven early-intervention brain-centered programs, with the goal of helping at-risk and developmentally delayed students increase their school readiness skills and maximize their academic potential.
BSMART is the only facility on the island that incorporates brain centered maturation techniques in order to increase academic success. It has been shown to increase school readiness and mastery of basic skills in both general and at-risk populations of economically disadvantaged and racial minorities (especially males). Data collected by BSMART indicates that the program has already made a difference in the community, especially to those most in need and at risk. BSMART addresses the need of why so many pre-schoolers, especially those from high-risk backgrounds, turn up on their first day of school lacking the fundamental readiness skills, which spirals into a range of additional problems for the child as they grow older. Without early identification of cognitive and developmental deficits, students are on a path that makes success remarkably more difficult from their peers. S.M.A.R.T. (Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training) addresses these types of issues, or deficiencies, by targeting their foundational source – the brain. BSMART offers a diverse range of options for parents and schools to be able to take advantage of S.M.A.R.T.
Unfortunately, the majority of students left behind are generally those who are already disadvantaged, from low socio-economic backgrounds, and facing multiple additional risk factors. Disadvantaged families are least likely to have economic and social resources to provide the early developmental stimulation every child needs to develop school readiness, academic achievement and a foundation for future success. Consequently, the majority of children most in need of BSMART’s services are those whose families are unable to pay for services. Therefore, BSMARTs primary need is in the form of funding to provide student bursaries. BSMART struggles to obtain enough funding to keep programs running.
To increase cognitive, physiological, and neurodevelopmental functioning of infants.
During the school terms, BSMART offers an afterschool programme for both public and private school students between the ages of 4 and 8 years at the BSMART Center. Students attend the program after school in order to benefit from the science behind BSMART’s intervention approach, and support them in catching up or getting ahead in school. This is BSMARTs flagship program which provides foundational neurophysiological brain stimulation input in the areas of; auditory discrimination, vision, laterality/directionality, eye-hand coordination, fine motor, grossmotor, development, ocular motor development, visual motor perception, and cognitive development. BSMART's afterschool program also includes one-on-one cognitive tutoring where students are tutored using Audiblox. Audiblox is a system of cognitive exercises, aimed at the development of foundational learning skills of reading, spelling, writing, mathematics and the skills required in the learning of subject matter. This service provides a more focused and intensive intervention than the larger group programs.
Improvement in cognitive, physiological and socio-emotional skills.
Ensuring that families with children who are struggling with learning &/or developmental challenges, obtain the services and programs they require to ensure they will enter school with the skills for academic, social/emotional and physical success
BSMART evaluations and data, including the below testing (only effective for students that attend regularly for the entire academic year)
During school holidays BSMART offers camp for students between the ages of 4 and 8 years. These camps are incredibly popular and expose students to the S.M.A.R.T intervention as well as the additional fun but structured and purposeful camp activities that keeps kids coming back. Students attend the program from 8:30am - 3:00pm but after care is available between 3 -5:30pm for an additional fee.
BSMART has been awarded the distinction of being Bermuda’s designated dissemination site for ACTG’s S.M.A.R.T. (Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training) Program. BSMART's accreditation is by "A Chance To Grow" (ACTG), based out of teacher-training institute, the Minnesota Learning Resource Center (MLRC) to implement S.M.A.R.T programs.
